In 1924, the world’s first pvc plastisol vinyl rotocasting (ROTOCAST) machine was invented in Germany, and the first toy, a “chocolate rabbit”, was successfully produced. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in toy manufacturing with the pvc plastisol vinyl rotocasting process.

First, a thin copper layer is plated on the surface of the prototype layer by layer through electroplating to form a simple metal mold. Then, PVC plastisol is poured into the mold. The mold is then placed in a vinyl rotocasting oven, heated at 180℃-280℃ and continuously rotated. Under the action of gravity, the paste evenly adheres to the inner wall of the mold. After cooling, the mold is opened to take out the product, which is mainly used for producing hollow-molded items.

The master mold production of traditional vinyl rotocasting is complex. First, a clay model is carved manually or by machine, and then a wax model is reproduced based on the clay model. Due to the approximately 3% shrinkage during mold turning, the size of the wax model needs to be enlarged accordingly. The wax model is then placed in an electroplating tank to obtain a copper master mold through electrolytic reaction, and the production mold is duplicated from the master mold.

PVC plastisol vinyl rotocasting products are usually soft and elastic, with no parting lines, light weight, a bouncy feel, and are not easy to break when dropped. However, due to the poor fluidity of PVC paste, it cannot be used to make highly detailed and complex products. Additionally, the production process involves many manual operations, leading to high uncertainty in finished products and a high rejection rate.

It is mainly used to make various types of doll toys, such as vinyl casting Barbie dolls and underwater world toys. It is also commonly used in the production of some trendy toys and figurines.
